They solve different problems and most teams use both. Terraform provisions infrastructure; Ansible configures what runs on it. If you are containerised, you may need much less Ansible than you think, and we will say so.

Can you automate servers already running in production?

Yes, and carefully. We write playbooks that converge to the current state first and verify they are genuinely idempotent against a staging copy before running anything against production.

How do you handle secrets?

Ansible Vault at minimum, and integration with a dedicated secret store such as HashiCorp Vault or AWS Secrets Manager where the environment justifies it. Secrets never land in the repository in plain text.
